DULUTH, Minn. (TND) — A Minnesota woman has been charged with the murder of her two children and neglecting a third after setting fire to a house and fleeing the scene.
Jennifer Marie Stately, 35, was charged after allegedly stabbing a minor in the chest with a "knife or other sharp object" and setting fire to the house before leaving the second minor to die from smoke inhalation, according to a news release from U.S. Attorney Andrew M. Luger.
Per the release, Stately then fled the scene in her vehicle with the third minor on March 15 from the Red Lake Indian Reservation.
Later that night, an Amber Alert was issued and a motorist called law enforcement after spotting Stately's vehicle, the release stated.
"Law enforcement located and stopped Stately’s vehicle and recovered Minor C, who was suffering from visible signs of child neglect," officials said.
Stately was charged with one count of premeditated murder, one count of murder in the course of committing child abuse, one count of murder in the course of committing arson, one count of arson, and one count of felony child neglect.
“This tragic case demonstrates the importance of close working relationships between the U.S. Attorney’s Office and our state, federal and tribal law enforcement partners. Together, we are able to bring charges swiftly in cases such as this on behalf of the most vulnerable among us,” Luger said in the release.
An online obituary states the two children were brothers born to Stately and Brian Graves Jr. in Red Lake, Minn.
Stately remains in custody pending further proceedings.
